DAYTON BEGINS CRITICAL STRETCH WITH THREE-GAME SET AGAINST UMASS

April 26, 2007

Atlantic 10 Baseball

Two teams fighting for a spot in the six-team Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships meet this weekend at Time Warner Cable Stadium as Dayton plays host to Massachusetts. The Flyers and Minutemen will play a three-game series on Friday (2:30 p.m. ET), Saturday (1 p.m. ET) and Sunday (Noon ET) that can be followed with Live Audio and Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com.

UD and UMass enter the weekend with identical 6-9 records in conference play. The two teams are tied for 10th place in the A-10 standings, but are just one game back of sixth place Rhode Island that enters the weekend at 7-8. The Flyers close out their Atlantic 10 schedule with series against La Salle (also 10th place at 6-9), George Washington (fifth place at 8-7) and Saint Louis (seventh place at 6-8).

Dayton looks to benefit from the continued rise in the play of outfielder Bobby Getty. The senior had five straight hits to start the day against Wright State on Tuesday, which lifted his average to .315 on the season. Getty is third on the team in average while leading UD in doubles (10) and ranking second in home runs (four), runs scored (27) and RBI (24). He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games including four in a row entering this weekend.

Classmate Chris Rubio will look to put forth another solid start to begin a weekend series for the Flyers. Rubio has struck out 21 batters and walked just nine in five starts against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents this season. He has pitched at least 6.0 innings in all five of those starts including 7.2 innings against nationally-ranked Charlotte last Friday. Rubio matched National Pitcher of the Year candidate Adam Mills pitch-for-pitch with five strikeouts in a no-decision against the 49ers.
