BASEBALL OPENS 2008 SEASON WITH THREE-GAME SERIES AT CAMPBELL

The University of Dayton will begin its 103rd season of baseball this weekend with a three-game series at Campbell on Friday (DH) and Saturday. All three games between the Flyers and the Fighting Camels can be followed with Live Stats at www.DaytonFlyers.com.

UD was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season according to the preseason Coaches Poll, but the Flyers have plans on out performing that expectation to make it back to the A-10 postseason. Dayton returns 15 letterwinners from a team that won 21 games last season including eight pitchers and seven positional players.

The 2008 roster has been bolstered by the addition of 12 newcomers which includes JC transfers Jake Hoover, Marshall MacDonald, Ryan Nevill and Jacob Spaeth.

Dayton's pitching staff should also benefit from another season of experience as six pitchers that tallied 25 innings or more last year will take the hill this season for UD including three seniors and two juniors. UD racked up the fourth most strikeouts in school history last season (315) while allowing the second fewest number of walks in the Atlantic 10 Conference (169).

Also back for the Flyers this season are junior catcher Scott Dunwoody, outfielder Myles Swartzel and infielder Cole Tyrell. Dunwoody and Swartzel were first and fourth respectively on the team in hitting last season while Tyrell was second on the squad in stolen bases.

UD Head Coach Tony Vittorio returns for his ninth season at Dayton. He has led the Flyers to four 30-win seasons en route to a 218-233 record on campus.
