The University of Dayton baseball team fell in the finale of a three-game series at Wofford Sunday, 5-2 at Russell C. King Field.

The Flyers fell to 2-1 on the season while the Terriers improved to 1-5 overall.

Due to a stellar effort from three Wofford pitchers, Dayton managed just six hits on the day and stranded 10 runners on base. Bobby Getty led the Flyer offense with a 2-for-4 performance including a run scored.

Redshirt senior Kaleb Thompson began the day on the mound for the Flyers and allowed four runs on just three hits while striking out a trio of Terriers in 4.0 innings pitched.

Classmate Drew Chesebro followed in relief and surrendered one run on two hits whule fanning two in 3.0 innings pitched.

Another senior Mark Eger finished off the game on the mound for Dayton with a perfect eighth inning including two strikeouts.

Wofford struck first as the Terriers generated a run with two outs. Stephen Johnson drew a walk and then scored on a blast off the right centerfield wall by David Long to put the home team ahead 1-0.

Dayton had its chances to even the score during its next two at bats, but the Flyers left five runners on base in the second and third inning combined as Terrier starter Austin Redwine struck out four UD batters during that time.

WC built a cushion in the bottom of the fourth with three runs as the Terriers loaded the bases before scoring runs on a hit batter, RBI fielder's choice and a wild pitch to push their lead to 4-0.

The Flyers cut the deficit in half with a pair of unearned runs. After one out was on the board, Michael Massa reached on a fielding error and Bobby Getty walked. The pair moved up a base on a wild pitch and then Massa scored on an RBI ground out by Galen Schumm. Brandon Godzik followed with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to drive in Getty and make the score 4-2 in favor of Wofford.

The Terriers added a run to their lead with another two-out rally as Scott Holloway beat out a high bouncing ground ball that could have ended the inning with a double play. Holloway then stole second and came around to score when Eric Sturkie smacked a double to the right centerfield gap to put Wofford ahead for final score of 5-2.

Dayton's home opener is scheduled for next weekend at the newly completed Time Warner Cable Stadium. The Flyers will host Youngstown State in a three game series with a Saturday doubleheader at Noon and single-game Sunday at 1 p.m.
