ATHENS, Ohio - Visiting Dayton lost a tightly played game at Ohio 6-5 Tuesday evening in non-conference baseball action at Bob Wren Stadium.
The loss dropped Dayton to 22-14 overall while Ohio improved to 16-14 on the year.
Junior Galen Schumm continued his hot stretch at the plate as he was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. He has now hit safely in each of the last four games.
Three other Flyers had multi-hit days as UD tallied nine hits overall. Bryan Chandler was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. William Benoit and Craig Rohren were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior Drew Chesebro got the start for the Flyers and earned a no decision as he was credited with five runs allowed on nine hits over 6.0 + innings pitched. He fanned four batters and surrendered just two walks.
Sophomore Kyle Lindsay came on in relief to pitch the final two innings for Dayton. He surrendered a run on three hits while striking out one while falling to 3-2 on the year.
Homestanding Ohio marked the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning. A leadoff single and a one-out walk laid the groundwork for both Bobcat runs which were driven in on an RBI double to the right field corner and a ground out to short for a 2-0 OU advantage.
The Bobcats added another run in the third on a two-out RBI single. The base hit through the left side of the Flyer infield gave Ohio a 3-0 lead after three innings.
Dayton's offense came alive in the fifth with a pair of runs from the top of its lineup. Michael Massa worked a full count before drawing a leadoff walk. Schumm then followed with UD's first home run in 11 games on a blast to right field. The sophomore's second homer of the season pulled the Flyers to within a run at 3-2 midway through the fifth inning.
UD then took over the lead with three runs in the sixth. Benoit began the offense with a leadoff single. Chandler then knotted the score at 3-all with a double to the right centerfield gap. Rohren followed with an infield single to short and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Aaron Hepner. Schumm followed with a two-out single up the middle to plate Chandler and Hepner as Dayton took a 5-3 lead midway through the sixth inning.
Ohio got one back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI double to the left field corner. The Bobcat run cut the UD lead to 5-4 at the end of the sixth inning.
OU took back the lead in the seventh with a pair of runs. An RBI ground out followed by a base hit to left gave the Bobcats a 6-5 lead at the end of the seventh frame.
