MALIBU, Calif. – Dayton broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the ninth inning to snap a four-game losing streak and defeat Pepperdine, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Senior Jimmy Roesinger started the ninth inning rally with one-out single and was advanced to scoring position after juinor Bobby Glover laid down a sacrifice bunt in the next at-bat. Junior Brian Blasik played the role of hero by driving in Roesinger for the go-ahead run on a single to center field.

Blasik’s ninth inning hit was his first of the day, and gave him a hit in every game played this season while extending his hitting streak to 14 games – dating back to last season.

Junior reliever Mike Hauschild (4-2) took to the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning and shut the door on Pepperdine by striking out the side in order. Hauschild entered the game in the eighth inning to make his first relief appearance of the season after five starts. The Beavercreek, Ohio native threw two innings with four strikeouts retired every batter he faced.

“I thought this was a clean hard-fought game from both teams and we were fortunate enough to come out on top,” Head Coach Tony Vittorio said. “Mitchem and Hauschild went right at them and our defense was outstanding, led by the efforts of Skochdopole.”

Junior Burny Mitchem made the start on the mound for the Flyers and pitched five scoreless innings before leaving a tie game in the eighth inning.

Junior C.J. Gillman contributed a season-best 4-for-5 performance at the plate while driving in two of Dayton’s three runs.

The Flyers and Waves conclude their three-game season series tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
