MITCHEM TOSSES COMPLETE GAME VICTORY TO EVEN SJU SERIES

CAMDEN, N.J. – Junior Burny Mitchem threw his first career complete game as UD defeated Saint Joseph’s 3-1 on Saturday night at Campbell’s Field.

Dayton (22-18, 7-4 A-10) improves to 4-0 when Mitchem is starting on the mound during conference season. The Farmington, Mich., native recorded six strikeouts in nine innings, allowing one run on four hits. After the Hawks’ one run in the third inning, Mitchem faced one over the minimum in the last six innings.

Senior Jimmy Roesinger helped tie the game in the seventh inning with a two-out double to score catcher Danny Welch. Roesinger finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Flyers then scored two runs in the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The first three Flyers reached base in the inning, followed by a bases-loaded wild pitch to score the go-ahead run. Junior Brian Blasik saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end, but was credited with a sacrifice RBI to drive in the second run of the inning.

The Saint Joseph’s (14-24, 5-9) pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts, as Chad Simendinger (2-5) received credit for the loss. Reliever Brian Penalo pitched the last two innings for SJU with four strikeouts and allowing no hits.

Neither team featured a player with a multi-hit game on Saturday.

After the 7:15 p.m. ET first pitch, the Flyers are 4-0 in night games this season.

The Flyers even the season series with Saint Joseph's (14-24, 5-9), which will conclude tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET at Campbell’s Field in Camden, N.J.
