HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mike Hauschild pitched eight innings with just one earned run as the Flyers scored 10 runs to earn their first win of the season in game two of a doubleheader at High Point on Saturday, 10-2. High Point won the first game of the series, 6-3.
Dayton (1-3) earned its first win of the season behind five consecutive shutout innings from Hauschild with four strikeouts and a career-high four RBI from senior centerfielder Bobby Glover. Glover, who reached four RBI for the fourth time in his career, finished with two hits - the team’s first homerun and first triple of the season.
Hauschild (1-0) pitched five consecutive shutout innings with four strikeouts to end High Point’s three-game winning streak. High Point (5-2) used six pitchers in game two, but starter Jon Carlson (0-1) gave up Glover’s decisive homerun in the fourth to receive the loss.
Glover hit his two-run homerun in the fourth inning to give the Flyers their first lead of the doubleheader, 2-1. Blasik preceded Glover’s homerun with a full-count walk to lead off the inning. Glover then took a 2-0 pitch to left field to give UD the go-head lead.
During freshman A.J. Ryan’s breakout day at the plate, he expanded the Flyer lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded two-run single to right field. Ryan finished 1-for-3 with two RBI in game two and 1-for-2 with an RBI in game one – the first hit and RBI of his collegiate career.
Sophomore Mel Skochdopole led off the seventh inning with a double to left field. He was advanced home on back-to-back sacrifice flies which widened UD lead to four runs, 5-1. Joe Gayda pinch hit for the second time in as many games and hit a pop fly to centerfield which moved Skochdopole to third base. Kuris Duggan flied out to centerfield, again allowing Skochdopole to tag and advance home to score.
Dayton kept on hitting with two outs in the seventh inning to supplement its lead with two more runs. The Flyers took advantage of three High Point errors in the eighth to add three more runs for the 10-2 lead.
Sophomore lefty Tommy Konrad relieved Hauschild in the ninth inning to close the door on the Panthers with two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Senior C.J. Gillman went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the second game to extend his hitting streak to eight games, dating back to last season. Gillman went 2-for-3 in the first game.
The High Point Series
The Flyers now have a 11-9 series advantage over High Point after breaking a four-game losing streak against the Panthers in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Up Next
Dayton and High Point will conclude its three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Right-handed pitcher Kyle Coenan will make his Flyer debut on the mound against High Point’s Jacob Newberry.
