Dayton Flyers

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Dayton took an early 5-1 lead over No. 1 Kentucky, but lost 19-6 on Wednesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium after a two-hour rain delay.

The Flyers fall to 12-18 before resuming conference play this weekend in Charlotte. Kentucky improves to 28-2 after extending its home winning streak to a program record of 20 games.

Senior shortstop Brian Blasik extended his hitting streak to 11 games after a 3-for-5 showing at the plate. Senior centerfielder Bobby Glover went 2-for-5 to maintain his streak of reaching base in all 30 games this season. 

UD sent seven pitchers to the mound as sophomore lefty Tommy Konrad (3-2) received the loss after allowing six runs in the second inning with one strikeout. Senior Tim Bury started the game and was limited to one inning on a staff day. Bury exited the game with a 4-1 Flyer lead.

UK’s Sam Mahar (2-1) earned the win on the mound after pitching 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and allowing one run.

Dayton jumped out to a 4-0 after the first half inning. Glover singled up the middle, Blasik singled through the right side and C.J. Gillman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for UD. A.J. Ryan drove in Glover and Blasik with a double to left field which gave UD a 2-0 lead. Joe Gayda traded places with Ryan on a ground-rule double over the right field wall to increase UD’s lead to 4-0

Kentucky chipped into Dayton’s lead with a solo homerun from Thomas McCarthy in the bottom of the first.

Dayton increased its lead to 5-1 after scoring a run in the second inning. Glover again sparked UD’s scoring inning with a single up the middle. Blasik then singled to centerfield and a fielding error by the centerfielder allowed him to advance to third base and Glover to score the unearned run from first.

The Wildcats scored six runs in the second inning and took the go-ahead lead on a three-run homerun from Luke Maile. Maile finished 3-for-5 with two homeruns and four RBI. UK went on to score in every inning with six homeruns and a total of 24 hits.

Dayton resumes conference play at Charlotte this weekend. The three-game series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
