FLYERS FALL 68-66 TO NO. 19/17 NEW MEXICO

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Despite a late surge, the University of Dayton Flyers had their eight-game winning streak snapped in a 68-66 loss to the No. 19 New Mexico Lobos on Friday night.

Sophomore forward Chris Johnson tallied 21 points to lead the Flyers. Johnson hit five 3-pointers en route to his second consecutive double-figure night.

Chris Wright had led the team with 10 rebounds, four of which were on offense. Wright also had eight points.

New Mexico's Dairese Gary was instrumental in New Mexico's win. Gary scored seven of his 18 points in the final two minutes to help the Lobos past UD.

Johnson's trey with 16 seconds left in the game cut the lead to four, 65-61. Gary hit five of his last six free throws extending the lead to 68-63.

Johnson's last second 3-pointer made the final 68-66.

The Flyers held a brief 39-36 lead at the 12:58 mark early in the second half when they scored six unanswered points on London Warren's breakaway dunk, Warren's fast-break layup in traffic and a Wright, but the Lobos re-took the lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Roman Martinez.

Dayton returns to UD Arena for its final non-conference contest against the Ball State Cardinals on Tuesday, January 5. The game is part of a doubleheader in conjunction with women's basketball's game against Navy. Tip-off for the game against Ball State is slated for 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast locally on WHIO-TV and on the 1290 AM and 95.7 FM WHIO Radio.
