DAYTON, Ohio – For the first time in program history, University of Dayton men’s basketball lost to Richmond on its home court after a 70-61 loss on Tuesday night at UD Arena.

Freshman point guard Juwan Staten dished out four assists to become the all-time leader in assists by a freshman at Dayton. Staten, who did not start and was a gmae-time decision to even play after being very ill overnight and into game day, played 21 minutes while pulling down three rebounds. The Dayton native passed Negele Knight (1985-86) on the all-time freshman assists list.

Senior forward Chris Wright led the Flyers by scoring over 20 points for the third time this season, finishing with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting with eight boards. Josh Parker scored 11 points on three treys with a game-high five assists.

Despite the loss, Dayton (15-6, 3-3 Atlantic 10) still leads the all-time series with Richmond 11-6, but sees its perfect 6-0 mark at home against the Spiders come to an end. Richmond (16-5, 5-1) was led by 53 percent shooting from beyond the arc and Kevin Anderson’s game-high 26 points.

Anderson scored 18 points in the first half to lift the Spiders to a halftime advantage of 30-28. Richmond made five of its eight 3-pointers in the first half to pull out to a six-point lead with 5:16 remaining in the opening period. But Wright put Dayton within range after scoring all of UD’s points in a 7-2 run to bring the Flyers within one point at the 4:41 mark of the first half.

Wright picked up where he left off in the second period by scoring four points in a 6-0 UD run which gave the Flyers its first advantage of the game at 37-35 with 16:25 remaining. On the ensuing possession, the Spiders’ Dan Geriot converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play to put Richmond back on top, 38-37.

Richmond would not surrender its lead from thereon while expanding its largest lead to 12 points with 6:59 remaining. Dayton cut its deficit to six points with 33 seconds remaining on a Chris Johnson 3-pointer, but Richmond went 6-for-6 on its last three trips to the free throw line to seal the win.

The Flyers continue a critical stretch in A-10 play with league-leading Duquesne on Sunday, Jan. 30. Tipoff from Pittsburgh, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
