STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS FLYERS OVER 49ERS

Sophomore Devin Oliver contributed a career-high 14 points off the bench.

DAYTON, Ohio –
University of Dayton men’s basketball team defeated Charlotte, 75-65, on Wednesday night at UD Arena to improve to 16-9 overall and 6-5 in Atlantic 10 play. 

Senior Chris Johnson led with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting as the Flyers recovered from a three-point halftime deficit to outscore Charlotte 45-32 in the second half. All of Johnson’s four 3-point field goals were made in the second period. After going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line, the Columbus native is a combined 19-for-20 at the charity stripe during the last six games.   With Dayton down three (49-46) at the nine-minute mark, Johnson took the game over, sscoring 11 of the next 13 points to put Dayton up 61-55 with 4:12 to go.

Sophomore Devin Oliver scored a career-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting to give the Flyers an offensive spark off the bench, outscoring Charlotte 24-10 in bench points. Junior Kevin Dillard was the third Flyer in double figures with 13 points in a foul-plagued 17 minutes of action.

Senior Paul Williams dished out a career-high eight assists as the Flyers shot 44 percent from the field.

Charlotte (12-12, 4-7 A-10) was led by Chris Braswell’s 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 10-of-12 shooting at the free throw line. Seven players contributed minutes on Wednesday night for the 49ers – not including starting guard DeMario Mayfield who sat out due to a one-game suspension for violating team rules. Mayfield is averaging 10.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season

All of the five ties and seven lead changes came in the second half. Dayton took the go-ahead lead with 6:29 remaining on an Oliver two-point basket.
