Dayton Flyers

A pair of University of Dayton running standouts were both named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans after tremendous junior campaigns.  Both Chris Lemon and Ashley Cattran were named ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-Americans.

Lemon is the first UD men’s cross country runner to be named Academic All-American, while Cattran is the sixth Flyers women’s cross country/track and field student-athlete to be honored.

Lemon led the Dayton men’s cross country team in its exceptional 2009 campaign. He was the Atlantic 10 Conference’s individual cross country champion, leading the Flyers to a program-best third place at the A-10 Championship.  Lemon was the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year.  He was also UD’s Male Presidential Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  

The Toledo St. John High School graduate and Bowling Green, Ohio native carries a double major of Spanish and Education, with double minors of Mathematics and Linguistics.  He has a 3.92 GPA.

Ashley Cattran is a Pre-Med major with a 3.98 grade point average.  The A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year for outdoor track was also an NCAA regional qualifier in the mile.  Hailing from Centerville, Ohio, the Alter High School graduate set a UD record for the mile run (4:26.6) at the 2010 A-10 outdoor championship meet.  During the indoor season, she qualified for the NCAA championship meet in the 800 meter run.

The UD women won the Atlantic 10 cross country championship, tied for first in the A-10 indoor meet, and placed second at the conference outdoor championship.

Lemon and Cattran give the University three ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in the 2009-10 school year.  Football player Brandon Wingeier was a repeat first team selection last fall.   In all sports, Dayton has had at least one Academic All-American for 26 straight years.
 
To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
