Biography: One of four current Flyer alums on the UD coaching staff, Kevin Hoyng graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He was announced as the quarterbacks coach prior to the 2012 season. Prior to this role he served as tight end coach and assisted with the offensive line and receivers. Hoyng joins the Flyer coaching staff after a year of teaching and coaching at Northmont High School.
A two-time captain, Hoyng’s playing career from 2004 to 2007 was one of the best in school history. He holds the Flyer career records for total yardage (9,528), completions (530), passing yards (8,862), and touchdown passes (59). After his final season in 2007, Hoyng was named the PFL Offensive Player of the Year. He completed a school-record 34 passes in his final collegiate game, leading UD to a 42-21 victory over Albany in the Gridiron Classic that earned Dayton the 2007 Mid-Major I-AA National Championship.
Hoyng is the 2009 Tony Ernst Assistant Coach. Tony Ernst, a former quarterback who wore No. 6 and was a 1995 UD graduate, passed away unexpectedly. As a tribute to his spirit and character, the Ernst Family established the Tony Ernst Graduate Assistantship Football Coaching Position in 1999. The position is being funded by an annual memorial golf tournament in Tony’s honor. Beginning in 2001, the Inaugural Tony Ernst Memorial Golf Tournament was held.
