FINAL ROUND OF A-10 MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP WASHED OUT, FLYERS FINISH 6TH

May 8, 2005

Final Results

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Due to high winds and inclement weather, the final day of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship at the Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I. was canceled. The Flyers finished sixth overall, paced by the three-over par score from senior Tim Skufca.

Xavier University was declared the team champion and earned the A-10's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship with a score of 427. Only two strokes separated runner-up George Washington (451), Rhode Island (453) and Richmond (453) for second place. Saint Joseph's (460) finished fifth followed by UD in sixth (462).

In anticipation of the approaching weather, tournament officials made Friday a full day of golf as the entire field completed round one and nine holes of round two. Saturday's entire day was washed out and the rain did not break by Sunday, forcing the remainder of the Championship to be canceled.

Skufca shot an opening round 74 (+2) on Friday to find himself in seventh place after 18 holes on the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National course. Skufca went out in 38, came home in 36, then carded a 37 to start round two before darkness fell on the course Friday. His 111 (+3) score was good for seventh place.

UD finished just 11 strokes back of second-place GW. Junior Adam Myers posted a 115 (+7) through 27 holes while senior Brett Gould was one stroke back. Senior A.J. Quinter carded a 118 (+10) while Bill Everding shot a 121 (+13).

The Musketeers posted the top three golfers in the tournament, including sophomore Jason Kokrak and senior Neal Grusczynski who shared medalist honors with a two-under 106. Kokrak, the 2004 A-10 Rookie of the Year, shot a 67 in the first round equaling the course record set by PGA Tour Professional Bret Quigley. Xavier freshman Andy Connell (108) finished tied for third, just two strokes off the leaders, and earned the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honor for finishing as the top freshman.
