DAYTON, OH - Lubomir Bogdanov scored twice as the Dayton men's soccer team won a wild Atlantic 10 Conference opener Friday night, 4-3, over George Washington in double overtime. The Flyers rallied from down 3-1, down a man, and scored the tying and game-winning goals on penalty kicks by Bogdanov. UD is now 6-3-1 overall, and 1-0-0 in A-10 play.
Down 3-1 with 20 minutes to go, Terry Alvino (St. Louis, MO) headed in a corner kick from Damion Blackburn (Beavercreek, OH), tucking it in the near post at the 70:06 mark. Alvino scored for the third-straight game, his third goal of the year.
After Nate Darr (Centerville, OH) was sent off with a red card in the 72nd minute, UD was forced to play a man down. But Alvino was taken down from behind in the box, and Bogdanov (Sofia, Bulgaria) beat GW keeper Derek Biss to the right side for the game-tying goal.
Neither team converted in remainder of regulation, or in the first overtime. In the 105th minute, GW's Ben Mortimer picked up his second yellow and was sent off, evening up the teams at 10 players apiece.
With just under two minutes remaining in overtime, Alvino was again taken down in the box, this time at the elbow. Bogdanov converted the penalty kick, beating Biss to the left side to end the match. It was his fourth goal of the season, but upon scoring it, he went down in a heap and had to be assisted off the field.
Steve Ladislaw (Philadelphia, PA) picked up his fifth win in net, making a pair of saves in 108:10. Biss made six saves, and was aided by a team save early in the match. The Colonials fall to 3-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the A-10.
Omar Jarun (Peachtree City, GA) put UD on the board first with a shot from 10 yards out from a sharp angle. His third goal of the season came at the 29:20 mark. But just under a minute later, Trevor Martin answered for GW, heading a ball into the right side of the net from eight yards out.
GW took the lead just after halftime when Andre Chapman one-timed a ball out of the air. Chapman didn't get a lot on the shot, but it trickled to the far post and in before the UD defense could fish it off the goal line. Chapman tallied again in the 69th minute, heading in a restart after a UD foul just moment before Alvino kicked off the Flyers' heroics.
Dayton out-shot GW 15-10 overall in a rough match that featured 33 fouls from GW and 15 from UD. The Colonials also picked up seven cards to Dayton's two.
The Flyers, unbeaten in 12 straight home matches (11-0-1), will entertain La Salle on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Baujan Field.
