Dayton Flyers

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team had several academic achievements in 2011. The pinnacle was when one of its own, senior Michael Deyhle, received the Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award from the University of Dayton.

This prestigious award recognizes two student-athletes, one male and one female, who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership, and service to the University and Dayton community.

Deyhle embodied the term student-athlete. He was a three-time recipient of the 4.0 Flyers Award, a two-time member of the OASSA All-Academic Team (with the highest grade point average on his team) as well as a member of the 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team and the 2011 All-Ohio Academic First Team.

The Cincinnati native was distinguished with men’s soccer’s “The Program” Achievement of Excellence Award for the second consecutive season. On the field, Deyhle was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year helping the team to 29 shutouts.

In addition to Deyhle’s 4.0 GPA, Brian Alvarez, Michael Deyhle, John Howe, Jonathan Nelson and Ryan Peterson earned a 3.50 GPA or better.

The team was also recognized by the National Collegiate Soccer Coaches Association of America as one of its All-Academic Teams after the Flyers earned a cumulative team GPA of 3.15.

UD returns 20 to next year’s squad. Additionally, UD added eight newcomers to its roster for 2012. Brian Bates, Michael Frasca, Chris Froschauer, Anthony Keene, Andrew Lightner, Blake Muehlstein, Anthony Pagano and Ryan Suddarth will play for Dennis Currier and the Flyers next year.
