MASON, Ohio—The University of Dayton men’s tennis team placedin a tie for fifth at the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship after splitting a pair of matches at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
UD’s fifth-place finish is its best since 2006, when the Flyers were fourth in the tournament.
Dayton, the #10 seed, pulled the first upset of the championship by beating seventh-seeded Saint Joseph’s 4-3 Friday afternoon.
Dayton took the doubles point, winning at No. 1 (Aidan Koross/Josh Malyon) and No. 3 (Beni Benalcazar/Colin Bernier). The Flyers won two singles matches (Malyon at No. 3 and Joe West at No. 6), but SJU captured three for a 3-3 tie with No. 2 singles still in progress. UD’s Andrew Hanley won the match for UD with a 6-4, 6-7 (0), 6-1 three-set victory.
UD advanced to take on second-seeded Xavier in the tournament quarterfinals. Xavier captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and then picked up three singles wins to clinch a 4-0 win.
