DAYTON TENNIS HAS STRONG WEEKEND

Both The Men's And Women's Teams Were Victorious

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men’s and women’s tennis teams had a very successful weekend finishing 4-1 overall.

The men opened up their spring season with a home with a 6-1 win against Robert Morris on Friday January 25th.

At the number two spot Robert Salcedo and Andrew Hanley won 8-3 and at the three spot Colin Bernier and Josh Malyon won 8-4.

At the number one singles spot, Aidan Koross defeated Angus Thompson (6-3, 6-4), Andrew Hanley at the two spot fell to Jose Limon (6-4, 6-4). Three singles Josh Malyon beat Tarun Kishan (6-4, 6-2), four singles Kyle MacDonald defeated Fernando Leite (6-1, 6-1) and at the five spot Enzo Milano beat Juan Andres Hirmas (3-6,6-3,10-6).

The women also defeated Robert Morris 7-0. Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens at one doubles finished 8-3. At the two spot, Katie Boeckman and Sammi Hornbarger tied 5-5, but did not complete. At the three spot, Erin Filbrandt and Claire McNulty won 8-3.

In singles action Sammi Hornbarger defeated Carolina Teixeira (6-2, 5-7, 10-7), Carly Peck won her match (6-0, 6-2), and at three singles Maureen Stevens won (6-1, 6-4). Katie Boeckman beat Clarissa Chen at the number four spot (6-4, 6-2) UD also had victories from Claire McNulty (6-2, 6-1) and Erin Filbrandt defeating Isabella Novella (6-0, 6-1).

After beating Robert Morris the men traveled to Muncie, Indiana for a match up against Ball State in which they were defeated 7-0.

The women finished up with Robert Morris and traveled north to Indiana as they took on IUPUI.

IUPUI

In singles play, Sammi Hornbarger defeated Shelby Hullett (6-3, 6-1), Carly Peck defeated Vanessa Whyte (6-1, 6-3). Dayton also had victories from Katie Boeckman defeating Rachael Bridegroom (6-2, 6-2) and Erin Filbrandt defeating Jesika Bays (6-1, 6-1).

In doubles action, the two spot of Katie Boeckman and Sammi Hornbarger defeated Abbey Neff and Vanessa Whyte with a score of 8-5. The one spot of Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens lost their contest 8-3. In the three spot, Claire McNulty and Erin Filbrandt were also defeated in a close 8-6 match.

The Flyers were able to close out the Jaguars and come away with a 4-3 victory. The women then headed back home for a cross town competition against Wright State University.

 

WRIGHT STATE INVITATIONAL

After a trip to Indiana, the Flyers took on the Wright State Raiders where the Flyers brought home the victory 5-2.

In singles competition, Maureen Stevens claimed the three singles victory defeating Taylor Hines (6-2, 4-6, 10-4), in four singles, Claire McNulty defeated Amy Nini (6-3, 6-2), in five singles, Katie Boeckman defeated Chelsea Girgash (3-6, 6-3, 6-1), and in the six spot, Erin Filbrandt defeated Liz Steingass (6-3, 6-3).

In doubles play, at the number one spot, Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens defeated Alex Bastock and Kayla Tuscany of WSU with an 8-7 victory. Erin Filbrandt and Claire McNulty were also victorious in their three spot doubles match with an 8-5 win.

It was an overall successful weekend for the Flyers with the women improving their record to 4-3 and the men improving their record to 1-1.

The women are back in action this weekend Feb 1st & 2nd as they play host to Ball State at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Xavier at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. All matches will be play at the Five Seasons.

The men head north to Northern Illinois University where they have two competitions Feb 1st and 2nd against Northern Illinois (02/01/13) at 1:00p.m. and versus Valparaiso (02/02/13) at 10:00 a.m.
