<P><B>May 7, 2009</B><P><B>DAYTON, Ohio - </B>
With the academic year coming to an end and the University of Dayton recently celebrating its 2009 commencement, here is a look back at honored Flyer athletes that received special departmental academic awards in 2008-09. In addition to the two Outstanding Presidential Scholar-Athletes honors, awards bestowed on Dayton athletes were: The Reverend Charles L. Collins, S.M. Award of Excellence, The Charles R. Kendall Memorial Award of Excellence, The John L. Macbeth Memorial Awards, and The Ann E. Meyers Award of Excellence.
<P>The Presidential Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award is a very prestigious honor which recognizes two University of Dayton student-athletes - one male and one female - who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership, and service to the University and Dayton community. Senior football player <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/m-footbl/mtt/bergfeld_bart00.html" >Bart Bergfeld</a> and senior women's soccer player <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-soccer/mtt/gallow_amanda00.html" >Amanda Gallow</a> were this year's recipients of the Presidential Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Awards.
<P>The Athletics Citizenship award - also known as The Reverend Charles L. Collins, S.M. Award of Excellence to an athlete for Outstanding Citizenship was donated by Joseph Zusman ('65), recognizes an individual student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding citizenship. This year the honoree was senior women's tennis player <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-tennis/mtt/dzubay_nicole00.html" >Nicole Dzubay</a>.
<P>The Charles R. Kendall ('29) Memorial Award, donated by Mrs. Charles R. Kendall and friends, recognizes an individual student-athlete who has demonstrated excellent academic and athletic achievements. The winner of the award this year was senior men's golfer <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/m-golf/mtt/chappell_rob00.html" >Rob Chappell</a>. He was recently named to the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf All-Academic Team and is a four-time member of the Dean's List.
<P>Senior linebacker <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/m-footbl/mtt/falk_will00.html" >Will Falk</a> and junior <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/huelsman_kurt00.html" >Kurt Huelsman</a> were recognized with the John L. Macbeth Memorial Award to the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete in Football and Basketball. Falk is a three-time member of the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll.
<P>Senior defensive specialist <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/robbe_mandy00.html" >Mandy Robbe</a> was honored with The Ann E. Meyers ('80) Award of Excellence, bestowed on a women's basketball or volleyball player for achievement in academic and athletic effort. Meyers was an All-American in volleyball and basketball, and also played softball. She was inducted into Dayton's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Robbe, along with <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/norris_kortney00.html" >Kortney Norris</a>, were selected as the winner of the R. Elaine Dreidame Award given to a student-athlete that best exemplifies the meaning of team. Robbe was also named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. |
