The University of Dayton women’s basketball team aims to keep its home court winning streak intact when it hosts the Charlotte 49ers Wednesday, Feb. 3 at UD Arena. The Flyers have won six straight at home and are 7-1 overall on Tom Blackburn Court this season.
It will be “Math Day” at UD Arena, an event where grade-school children from all over the Miami Valley will take part in 20 different math-related stations prior to the game from 9:30-11 a.m. Stations include hopscotch, corn hole, measuring exercises, crafts, scavenger hunts and basketball drills. Approximately 3,000 students will then watch the Charlotte-Dayton women’s basketball game which tips off at 11 a.m. ET.
The game will be broadcasted by 1660 Info Radio by commentators Barney Sentner and Tyler Logan. The halftime interview will feature UD assistant coach Angie Russell. The game will also have live streaming video and stats at DaytonFlyers.com.
LAST TIME OUT
The Flyers shot a season-low 26 percent from the floor in a 74-49 loss to No. 10 Xavier Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Cintas Center. Dayton, ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring offense with 71.2 ppg, posted its lowest scoring tally of the season against the Musketeers. Eleven different UD players found the scoring column, but Kristin Daugherty was the only one to reach double figures; she scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the first half for Dayton. XU won the battle of the boards, 56-30. This is just the fourth time this season Dayton has been outrebounded and only the second time this season the Flyers have been outrebounded by double digits.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
The 49ers are 13-8 overall and are second in the Atlantic 10 standings with a 6-1 mark in Conference play. After starting the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-7 mark and then losing their A-10 opener in double overtime to Duquesne, the 49ers have rattled off six straight wins. Charlotte has a 3-5 record when playing on the road this season. Junior Shannon McCallum leads the 49ers with 12.5 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 42 steals and 19 blocks. She is also third on the team in assists with 49. Senior Aysha Jones adds 10.0 ppg and senior Ashley Spriggs tacks on 9.9 ppg. Charlotte is the defending champion of the A-10 Tournament title.
SERIES STUFF
The Flyers are 1-4 all-time against the Charlotte 49ers and have split the last two meetings. Last season, UD fell 60-57 on the road to Charlotte on Jan. 24, 2009 at Dale F. Halton Arena. Four different Flyers scored in double figures, led by 14 points from Kendel Ross. Kayla Moses added 12 points and three assists, while Kristin Daugherty and Patrice Lalor both contributed 10 points. Ashley Spriggs had 16 points for the 49ers. The Flyers’ only win over Charlotte came at a neutral site (Alumni Memorial Hall Field House in Philadelphia) during the 2008 A-10 Championship. UD dealt Charlotte a 77-53 loss in the first round of the tournament. Kendel Ross had 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

UD HOOPS FOR HAITI
For their game vs. Xavier on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. ET the Flyers are holding a UD Hoops for Haiti benefit. All proceeds on tickets from the Xavier game will go to Haiti relief. The cost of each ticket is $2 but larger monetary donations will also be accepted. The Flyers are also going to be selling T-shirts with all proceeds going to Haiti relief.
