DAUGHERTY REPEATS AS ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONOREE

DAYTON, Ohio - University of Dayton women’s basketball player Kristin Daugherty has been named Second Team University Division ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV, it was announced Thursday.

A junior from Fresno, Ohio, Daugherty carries a 3.79 GPA in public relations. The two-time Flyer captain was also a 2008-09 second team all-district academic selection.

An Atlantic 10 Preseason Third Team selection, Daugherty is Dayton’s third-leading scorer this season, averaging 9.5 ppg. In less than three seasons, she has scored 971 points. She is 19th all-time on UD’s career scoring list and needs four points to catch Julie Arnold (1989-93). Daugherty would be just the 18th Flyer to join the 1,000-point club. She has played in 91 games and started 88 in her career. She has earned A-10 weekly honors five times in her career at UD, including three Rookie of the Week honors in 2007-08.

Earlier this season, she was named MVP of the Purdue BTI Classic, which the Flyers won in November. She was also named to the Dartmouth Blue Sky Classic All-Tournament team in December.

Last year she earned A-10 Third Team honors, in addition to earning all-tournament honors at the Texas World Vision Basketball Travelers Classic. In 2007, she was named MVP of the Dayton Flyer Classic.

The District IV teams are made up of student-athletes from Division I-A and I-AA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.

UD men’s basketball player Kurt Huelsman earned first team all-district academic honors.

Dayton hosts Saint Louis this Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. ET at UD Arena. When the Flyers host No. 7 Xavier on Wednesday, Feb. 17, all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Red Cross to support the relief efforts in Haiti.
