FOUR HOMERS POWER DAYTON TO 17-3 WIN OVER CANISIUS

Burny Mitchem has allowed just one walk in his last 14 innings.

Box Score

The University of Dayton baseball team lived up to its “Brown Street Bombers” nickname Friday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium with a 17-3 win over Canisius.  Eight of UD’s 17 hits were for extra bases.

Senior rightfielder Aaron Dunsmore led the attack by going four-for-five with two home runs and five RBI.  Second baseman Zach Jacob added three hits, four RBI and a home run and first baseman  Jonathan Castine had a two-run homer among his two hits.

Shortstop Cole Tyrell, catcher Dan Welch and leftfielder Joe Gayda each added two hits, and DH Brian Blasik had two RBI.

The 3-4-5 hitters in the Flyer lineup were a combined nine-for-14, with six extra-base hits, nine runs scored and 10 RBI.

Canisius scored two runs before starting pitcher Burny Mitchem recorded an out, but Mitchem mowed the Golden Griffins down the rest of his day, getting 18 outs over his next 19 batters faced.  Freshmen Trent Haughn and Bryce Lahrman took over on the mound, with Haughn tossing two shutout innings before turning the ninth over to Lahrman.

Dayton tied the game in the bottom of the first, took the lead for good with a run in the second and broke the game open with four in the third.  After a scoreless fourth, the Flyers scored in every other inning.  They capped off their big day at the plate with five in the eighth, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Jacob and Dunsmore.

Dayton improved to 7-9 with the win, and Canisius fell to 10-6.

The two teams will play game two of this weekend’s three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
