Dayton, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team ousted the LaSalle Explorers in both games of the doubleheader this afternoon, winning 5-4 and 2-0.

Throughout the two games the UD pitchers combined for a crippling 13 strikeouts, five hits and four runs. Dayton improved to 11-12 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 action to overtake the Explorers. LaSalle dropped to 7-9, 1-3 in the conference.

Senior Molly Meyer bookended the first game with a steal in the first inning and two in the seventh, both leading to runs.

The Flyers struck first when Brandy Brown doubled to left field, bringing Meyer home. The Explorers followed that up with a run of their own in the next inning.

After a solid defensive stretch, Dayton was able to get another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but were passed quickly by a two-run double by LaSalle in the fifth.

Dayton was down one in the seventh, with the top of the order due up. With one out, Meyer was walked, later stealing second and third, a total of four steals for the game. Following in Meyer’s footsteps, Senior Anne Maci was walked and stole second. An error on the shortstop led to two runs in the seventh, giving the Flyers the game.

This fierce game play carried into the second game. Sophomore Sarah Wedel pitched the entire game, only giving up one hit and zero runs. Wedel struck out six and pitched a perfect second inning, putting away all three batters.

Sophomore Courtney Kutsulis doubled in the third inning, leading to one of Dayton’s two runs. Maci scored the second and final run of the game as Emily Stegeman grounded out in the fourth.

Impressive pitching paired with excellent fielding in the second game made it impossible for LaSalle to get any runs on the scoreboard.

The Flyers have a quick turnaround, taking on the Fordham Rams tomorrow. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon ET at UD Stadium.
