GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Dayton track and field team will be sending two athletes to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships after a successful day of competition on Friday at the NCAA East Regional. Junior Mallory Barnes (hammer throw) and freshman Katie Nageotte (pole vault) both qualified for the national finals in Eugene, Ore. after continuing their remarkable outdoor seasons.

Now, for the first time in program history, the UD track and field team will have not just one, but two representatives at an outdoor final. Prior to this season, Dayton had sent three athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships, including Barnes just this February. But no Flyer has ever qualified for the outdoor version.

Barnes will be vying for her second-straight All-American effort this season at the meet. The A-10’s Most Outstanding Field Performer lived up to her title with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw, letting fly with her best throw (189-1) on her first attempt, which placed her sixth overall and earned a bid to the next round.

Nageotte, a first-year pole vaulter from Olmstead Falls, Oh., also punched her ticket to nationals by tying her school record mark of 12-09.50. The indoor and outdoor A-10 Champion placed 12th overall.

Junior Ashley Cattran also qualified for the East Regional, but did not make the cut for nationals after finishing 46th (4:41.88) in the 1,500-meter event.

The finals of the NCAA Championships will take place June 9-12 at the University of Oregon’s storied Hayward Field. The legendary venue, located in “Track Town USA” will have hosted the NCAA Championships for the 10th time when the 2010 meet is over – the most of any venue in modern history.
