DAYTON AND WISCONSIN BATTLE TO SCORELESS DRAW; UD WINS WISCONSIN SOCCER CLASSIC

Tyler Picard was named to the all-tournament team after recording a pair of shutouts

BOX SCORE

MADISON, Wis.
– University of Dayton freshman Jordan Beckett was named the Wisconsin Soccer Classic’s Offensive MVP after the Flyers captured the Classic’s Championship (based on goal differential) in a 0-0 tie on Sunday against the Wisconsin Badgers.

“I thought this weekend was a step in the right direction for us. We were more organized and had a great result on Friday night,” Currier said. “Getting a win and a draw on the road is good with a young team.”

Despite Sunday’s draw, the Flyer’s 2-0 goal differential on the weekend helped them break the tie for the tournament championship. Beckett scored his first collegiate goal on Friday against UW-Milwaukee.

Junior goalkeeper Tyler Picard recorded his second consecutive shutout of the season. Picard did so while playing a man down during the overtime periods due to Marlon Duran’s red card in the 98th minute.

“I thought that we played well defensively, and we kept our shape the whole game,” Dayton head coach Dennis Currier said. “We attacked and we became more dangerous throughout the game. We had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but Beckett’s header just went wide.”

The Flyers were outshot in the game 16-8 and Wisconsin held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“The boys battled hard and we maintained our shape when we went a man down and that’s what we needed to get the draw,” Currier said.

Dayton also had four named to the Wisconsin Soccer Classic’s All-Tournament Team.  Picard, Beckett and Duran were selected in addition to junior defender Jack Pearson.

UD (2-2-1) travels to Edwardsville, Ill. next week for the SIUE Soccer Classic. Dayton will face UMKC and SIU Edwardsville in the tournament.
