Sept. 21, 2010

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – National blocking leader Lindsay Fletemier was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week after guiding No. 19 Dayton to the Notre Dame Invitational title over the weekend, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Fletemier was named Most Valuable Player at the Notre Dame Invitational with 37 kills and 22 blocks in the Flyers’ three wins over Santa Clara, Delaware and Notre Dame. Through 68 total swings this weekend, Fletemier only recorded five attacking errors for a .471 hitting percentage. The Garden City, Mich., native also became the NCAA Division I blocks per set leader, averaging 1.84 per set and totaling 79 blocks this season.

Last Friday, Fletemier recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 blocks in a five-set win over Santa Clara. The 6-foot-6 middle blocker then put the Flyers on her shoulders in a dominating sweep of Delaware with a match-high 13 kills, no attacking errors and six blocks on Saturday. Fletemier helped ensure the Invitational title with seven kills and five blocks to sweep host Notre Dame on Sunday.

It is the second Atlantic 10 weekly honor this season for Fletemier, who earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 7. Fletemier was the A-10 Player of the Year and six-time Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week in 2009.

The conference office also announced Fordham’s Christi Griffiths as the Defensive Player of the Week, and Duquesne’s Allison Foschia as the Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.

No. 19 Dayton (9-3) moved up one spot in the AVCA Top-25 on Monday in its eighth consecutive week in the poll.

The Flyers are on the road for the fourth consecutive weekend to begin Atlantic 10 Conference play against Saint Louis and Duquesne. UD faces the Billikens on Friday at 8 p.m. ET in a rematch of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship match, followed by a trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., to play the Dukes on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
