COLUMBUS, Ohio –  The University of Dayton women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season with a bit of revenge. The Flyers downed Virginia Tech 3-0 in the first round in front of 941 fans at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday night. Dayton, who was knocked out of the tournament by Virginia Tech last season, improves to 19-3 overall, while the Hokies fall to 10-10-1.

Dayton’s first shot of the match was a good one. Senior Alli Giner struck from the top of the box after getting fed by sophomore Colleen Williams. Giner’s shot hit Virginia Tech goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts in her outstretched hands but bounced off and went to the back of the net.

It was Giner’s fifth goal of the season and it was the 12th assist on the season for Williams.

Senior Tori Oelschlager scored on a header off the assist from Giner in the 75th minute to put UD up 2-0. It was Oelschlager's fourth tally of the season.

Three minutes later, Williams put UD up 3-0 after a square pass from freshman Stephanie Emery. The score marked Williams’ 18th goal of the year.

This was Virginia Tech's loss to an Atlantic 10 team since 2004 (which was a 2-1 loss to UD). Last year the Hokies dealt UD its only loss of the year, 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies struck early in the game as Marika Gray scored in the sixth minute.

Senior Lisa Rodgers had five saves in goal. She has 11 shutouts on the season and improves to 15-1-0.

Virginia Tech outshot the Flyers 20-7 and had 13 corners to UD’s six.

Dayton will face Ohio State Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1p.m.  in the second round  at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes won the first match 1-0 in double overtime against St. Francis, Pa. OSU dealt Dayton a 1-0 loss at Baujan Field on Sept. 3, 2010.
