AMHERST, Mass. – Paul Williams scored 12 points and Juwan Staten had 10 points and seven assists as the University of Dayton Flyers had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 55-50 defeat against the Massachusetts Minutemen.

Chris Johnson had 10 points and six rebounds as the Flyers dropped to 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10.

Dayton’s defense put forth a strong defensive effort limiting UMass to shoot 27 percent from the field. In fact, most of the points scored by the Minutemen came at the free throw line. More than half of the Minutemen’s points came at the charity stripe as UMass went 29-for-36.

The closest Dayton would come came when Williams hit a three cut the Minutemen lead to 44-42 with 3:21.UMass countered with a three of its own to extend its lead back to five with two minutes to play.

Chris Wright finished with six points and seven rebounds, but was in foul trouble in the first half and only played 20 minutes.

The Flyers shot 28 percent from the field and were 5-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Staten had only two turnovers with his seven assists. Meanwhile, Johnson made it nine straight games scoring in double-figures.

Dayton returns home to face the Saint Joseph’s Hawks on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET.
