FLYERS FARE WELL IN DISTANCE RACES AT AKRON INVITE

AKRON, Ohio –  Chris Lemon set a new 5,000-meters indoor record and seven other Flyers set personal bests at the Indoor Track and Field Akron Invitational this weekend.

Lemon took sixth place in the indoor 5,000-meters Gold Division race Friday. He broke the Flyers’ team indoor record after finishing in 14:41.18, crushing the previous record of 15:16 set last year by Greg Roeth.

“Chris had a good showing in a very competitive field,” said UD Head Coach Rich Davis.

On Saturday at the Akron Invitational, eight runners set personal best times.

In the 5,000-meter Blue Division Race, sophomore Stephen Mackell destroyed his personal best time by 24 seconds, running it in 15:25.82. His previous personal best was set in an outdoor race.

In the 3,000-meter Blue Division Race, redshirt sophomore Greg Roeth took fifth place in a personal best time of 8:39.62. Teammate sophomore Jeremy Schiele was right behind him with a personal best time of 8:42.93. Freshman Eric Gruenbacher took 11th place in a personal best time of 8:51.61.

Four Flyers ran personal bests in the indoor mile. Sophomore Kyle Lowry led the pack with a 12th place finish in 4:21.2. Freshman Doug Norris finished in 16th place at 4:24.83. Fellow freshman Nick Fry was 23rd in 4:32.03. Sophomore Derek Bornhorst was 25th in a time of 4:37.31.

The Flyers will be back in action at the Early Bird Relays at Cincinnati on March 19.
