FLYERS ENJOY IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT OCCOQUAN SPRINTS

UD's Varsity 8 rallied and won the final heat by .22 seconds over West Virginia.
Heading into the upcoming conference championship, the Dayton Flyers women’s rowing team is coming in full steam ahead.

On Saturday, UD scrimmaged rival George Mason on the Potomac River, winning 3 of 3 timed pieces in the Varsity 8 and 2 of 3 in the Second Varsity 8. The Novice won all three timed pieces as well.

On Sunday UD won three events at the 2011 Occoquan Sprints in the Varsity 8, Novice 8 A and B boats. Though sunny and beautiful, the Flyers had to face a tough headwind and choppy waters.

Dayton’s top boat, the Varsity 8, won its final race by .22 seconds over West Virginia. Coxed by Kristin Dormish, UD clocked in with a time of 7:26.6, narrowly defeating the Mountaineers who finished at 7:26.82.

An impressive note in the Varsity 8 Grand Final was Dayton defeating fellow Atlantic 10 programs. Last year Saint Joseph's was second in the V8+ at the Atlantic 10 Championships and UD seventh. The Flyers also finished ahead of Duquesne and Temple.

Overall Dayton defeated 15 teams in the Varsity 8 and 11 in the Novice 8.

In the Novice 8, UD won the grand final by six seconds coming in with a time of 7:51.5. Led by coxswain Allison Storrs, Dayton earned a spot in the final by finishing second in the heats.

The Flyers' novice members also defeated A-10 competitors, bringing a huge boost to the team heading into this year’s conference tournament.

Dayton’s Second Novice 8 also won in the final defeating Liberty. UD finished with a time of 7:49.43.

In the Junior Varsity 8 final, Dayton placed in fourth coming in with a time of 7:50.4. The Flyers won their spot in the final after winning their heat with a time of 8:23.4.

In the Novice 4, UD won gold as Storrs led the Flyers with a time 8:55.2. Dayton’s Varsity 4 also won gold, taking their heat with a time of 8:19.58.

Up next for Dayton is the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women’s Rowing Championship. The event will be held on Saturday, April 16 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
