DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball Head Coach Cara LaPlaca has announced its 2012 schedule which features 16 home games at UD Softball Stadium. In addition, a select number of home games will be streamed on DaytonFlyers.com.
“We are excited about our upcoming 2012 schedule. Our non-conference schedule is challenging and will prepare our team well for a rigorous A-10 Conference season. We also continue some very tough regional rivalries,” LaPlaca said. “There is a tremendous amount of experience and leadership returning to our 2012 squad. With a deeper pitching staff, we have our sights set high and will work to push the Dayton Flyer softball program to a new level.”
Dayton opens the season on the road at the CenturyLink Classic in San Marcos, Texas. Dayton will play UT Arlington and Rutgers on Feb. 17, before facing tournament host Texas State and Texas Southern on Feb. 18. UD will finish the tournament against UT Arlington on Feb. 19.
UD travels to Chattanooga, Tenn. in the second week of action for the Frost Classic. The Flyers will play Cleveland State and Tennessee Tech on Feb. 24, Belmont and Ball State on Feb 25. and Purdue on Feb. 26 to close out the tournament.
USC Upstate will play host to Dayton’s third tournament, the Spartan Classic, beginning on March 2. UD will face Appalachian State and USC Upstate in the first day of events. On March 3, the Flyers play Lafayette and Appalachian State. Dayton and NC Central play on March 4.
The Flyers will have a brief reprieve from their tournament schedule when they play road doubleheaders against Morehead State on March 7 and Eastern Kentucky on March 13.
Dayton will make a short trip to Oxford, Ohio for the final regular season tournament of the year at the Miami Invitational. Dayton faces Eastern Michigan and Miami on March 16. UD plays Ball State and Niagara on March 17, before its final game of the tournament on March 18 against Miami.
UD opens its home slate with a six-game homestand. The Flyers will host Detroit Mercy in a home-opening doubleheader on March 20. Dayton then opens Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on March 24. UD faces Akron in a doubleheader on March 25.
The Flyers host Saint Louis (April 7), Temple (April 13-14), Saint Joseph’s (April 15), Fordham (April 27-28) and La Salle (April 29) at UD Softball Stadium. Dayton travels to UMass (March 30 and April 1), Rhode Island (April 2), Ohio State (April 11), IUPUI (April 17), George Washington (April 21), Ohio University (April 24), Charlotte (May 5) and regional rival Wright State (April 9).
A streaming schedule for Dayton’s home games has not been set. A separate announcement will be released when that information becomes available.
Saint Louis will host the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships May 9-12. The NCAA Regionals will be held May 18-20 and the Super Regional May 25-27. The Women’s College World Series is played in Oklahoma City May 31 through June 6.
Dayton returns 13 letterwinners from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2000. Senior Lauren Nacke was tabbed NFCA All-Region and Atlantic 10 First Team and broke the school’s career and single-season RBI records, as well as UD’s single-season home run record in 2011. Junior Kathleen Maloof was a selection on the A-10’s All-Conference Second Team and sophomore Alysha Isaacson was selected to the All-Rookie Team.
