Dayton, OHIO-
The University of Dayton will compete in the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship this Saturday Nov. 12 at Ottawa Park in Toledo, Ohio. The men’s 10k race will begin at noon followed by the women’s 6k race at 1:15 p.m.

The Flyers are coming off a solid performance at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Oct. 29. The team finished fourth with a total of 119 points. UD was led by redshirt junior Greg Roeth. His third place finish garnered him All-Conference honors for the third straight year. Junior Kyle Lowry (21st) and freshman Michael Russell (26th) were UD’s second and third runners with juniors Jeremy Schiele (28th) and Nate Addessi (44th) rounding out the scoring for the Flyers. Runners two through five all finished within a minute of each other providing a strong pack for Dayton. UD will return everyone next season.

“In the past we have met a plateau in the A-10 around fifth or sixth and in the last couple years have been around third or fourth,” said UD’s head coach Rich Davis. “Going into next season with everyone back we can raise our level up to first or second in the A-10.”

The favorites in the Great Lakes Regional are Wisconsin and Indiana who are ranked first and second in the Great Lakes Regional rankings and first and seventh in the nation. Despite their strong A-10 performance UD dropped out of the Great Lakes Regional rankings.

“Going into A-10 we were ranked 15th but after a very solid performance we dropped out of the rankings,” said Davis. “We are looking to go out and be very competitive with the teams ranked 12-15 in the region because that is where we think we should be. We are going into this race with the mindset that this race is the first race for the rest of our UD career.”

USTFCCCA All-Region honors will be awarded to those who are part of member programs and finish in the overall top 25 in their respective region. The top two teams from every region will advance automatically to the national meet. The rest of the 31-team field (13 at-large) and at-large individuals will be announced Sunday, no later than 7pm ET.

After each race of the season, Coach Davis recognizes two runners with Tough as Nails and Team Glue. The Tough as Nails goes to the runner who displayed the best physical and mental toughness during the race and the Team Glue recognition goes to the runner who, through the course of week, leading up to the race, makes sacrifices and gives encouragement and moral support.

After the Atlantic 10 Championships the recognition was given to the same person for the first time ever. Freshman Michael Russell received both honors.
