TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Dayton women’s cross country finished ninth at the Great Lakes Region Championship on Saturday afternoon at Ottawa Park.

Senior Elissa Mason led the Flyers with a personal-record 6K time of 21:09.4, which was good for 21st-place. Last season Mason finished 40th in the Great Lakes Regional race. All seven harriers for the Flyers recorded personal records on Saturday.

“We were all ecstatic about the way we ran today,” Head Coach Sarah Hinkley said. “We know how tough this region is and to come out and achieve our goal of finishing in the top 10 is great. I’m so happy with the team and how they rallied and left everything they had on the course.”

Mason has a chance to qualify for Nationals on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. The field will be announced on Monday. The top four individuals whom do not belong to a team that qualified for Nationals earn at-large bids.

Dayton’s ninth-place finish ties a program record for the best finish in the Great Lakes Region Championship after also placing ninth last season. Going into the weekend, the Flyers were ranked 13th in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region poll.

Michigan took home the team title as the Wolverines’ Danielle Tauro won the individual race.
