DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women’s basketball team dropped its first Atlantic 10 conference game of the season, 61-57, against the Temple Owls Sunday afternoon at UD Arena in front of 2,509 fans. A second-half frenzied comeback fell short and the Flyers are now 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the A-10. Temple improves to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Owls started the game red-hot after taking an 11-2 lead on a Victoria Macaulay lay-up with 16:23 left in the first half. Temple pushed their lead to 19-9 after a fastbreak lay-up by Shey Peddy with 10:56 remaining until halftime. Peddy led all scorers in the game with 21 points.
Dayton went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 21-16 after a pair of free throws by redshirt senior Elle Queen. Temple led for the entire half as both teams headed to the locker room with the Owls leading 32-22. The Flyers shot just 8-of-30 (26.7%) from the field in the first half while Temple shot 14-of-33 (42.4%).
UD sparked a 6-0 run at the beginning of the second half following a jumper by senior Casey Nance to cut the Owl lead to 32-28 with 18:06 remaining.
The Flyers trailed 49-42 with 9:33 left before UD scored eight unanswered points over the next three minutes and 56 seconds to take their only lead of the game 50-49 with 5:37 left. The Flyers’ lead lasted for just 18 seconds before a three-pointer by Peddy gave the Owls the lead for good 52-50.
The Flyers trailed by one, 58-57, with 26 seconds left after a high arcing runner dropped in for senior Patrice Lalor. However, Temple converted 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Lalor led three Flyers in double-figures with 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Queen scored nine of her 13 points in the first half and she dished out a team-high six assists. Senior Justine Raterman added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.
UD converted 16-of-29 shots in the second half (55.2%) and 24-of-59 for the game (40.7%). Temple shot 10-of-30 (33.3%) in the second half and 24-of-63 (38.1%) for the game. The Flyers had 20 turnovers and shot just 2-of-16 (12.5%) from beyond the arc.
Dayton is back in action on Wednesday Jan. 18 at Massachusetts. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. ET.
