PHILADELPHIA – University of Dayton baseball scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for a 3-2 win over La Salle on Thursday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
The Flyers improve to 15-7 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, two wins away from sharing a regular season title with Saint Louis (17-7). La Salle falls to 20-31 and 7-15 in league play.
Senior shortstop Brian Blasik and senior right fielder C.J. Gillman recorded consecutive RBIs in the eighth inning to tie the game at two. With two outs and runners at the corners, Gillman stole second and Blasik scored from third on a throwing error by the catcher to give UD the go-ahead 3-2 lead.
Senior Mike Hauschild (7-2) pitched eight innings with four strikeouts and allowed two runs to earn the win. With his four strikeouts, Hauschild is now tied for second place in career strikeouts at Dayton with Cameron Hobson (256).
Senior Burny Mitchem earned his fifth save of the season after holding the Explorers scoreless in the ninth with two strikeouts. Mitchem entered the game in the ninth, inheriting one runner followed by a sacrifice bunt and a single to put runners at the corners with one out. Dayton’s career strikeout leader then struck out the last two batters of the game, even recovering from a 3-0 count to fan the last out swinging.
La Salle starter Eric Van Wyk (3-8) allowed two earned runs and five hits to receive the loss on the mound.
Blasik ended Van Wyk’s no-hitter with a two-out double in the fourth inning. Blasik’s conference-leading 21st double of the season also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Senior left fielder Zach Stewart leads Dayton with a .377 average during conference play and finished 2-for-4, including his first triple of the season.
La Salle leadoff hitter Brenden Norton put the Explorers on the board with a two-out solo homerun in the third inning. Designated hitter Marc Schoch registered an RBI single in the sixth to give La Salle a temporary 2-0 lead.
Dayton’s eighth-inning rally was sparked by a one-out single up the middle by catcher Josh Jeffery, followed by two consecutive walks to load the bases. The two walks prompted a La Salle pitching change – closer Pat Christensen, a first team all-conference pitcher last season, for starter Van Wyk.
Christensen’s first batter was Blasik, who brought the Flyers to within one run on a RBI-fielder’s choice grounder which scored Jeffery. Gillman stuck a single through the left side to drive in the game-tying run. Blasik later scored the go-ahead unearned run on a throwing error by the catcher attempting to catch Gillman stealing second base.
Dayton and La Salle continue its three-game series on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
Defensive Play of the Game
After starting pitcher Mike Hauschild allowed his first hit of the day – a single to right field from Kevin Baron – right fielder C.J. Gillman quickly threw it to first base to pick-off Baron (rounding too far from first base) with catcher Kuris Duggan shifting positions to make the tag.
