MEN’S SOCCER ROUTS RICHMOND 5-0

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. –  The University of Dayton men’s soccer team (9-4-1, 3-2-1 A-10) scored early and often in a 5-0 shutout of the Richmond Spiders (6-10-0, 2-5-0 A-10) on Friday at Robins Field.

“We had a lot of energy tonight and we had great speed tonight. It was a very good win for us,” Dayton Head Coach Dennis Currier said. “We did a great job finishing and I thought we were really committed on the defensive end to get our first shutout of the year.”

Four different Flyers: Ryan Peterson, Abe Keller, Daniel Berko and Eddie Jones each had goals in the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Froschauer notched his first career shutout making eight saves in the match.

“We had to weather a storm in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Chris came up really big off of the corner kicks and once we weathered the storm we were able to put the game away. He’s kept us in games all year and tonight he recorded a well-deserved shutout,” Currier said.

Richmond held a slight advantage in total shots 24-20, however, Dayton held a 12-8 lead in shots on goal.

UD got on the board quickly, opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Peterson took a pass from Schoonderwoerd, beating the keeper on the right side for the 1-0 lead.

Keller struck next eight minutes later, scoring on a direct kick from 20 yards out.

Richmond came out strong in the second half with seven corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of action. Froschauer and company did a good job holding off the attack to remain ahead 2-0.

Jonesf inished on the left side in the 69th minute after taking a pass from Schoonderwoerd, extending the lead to 3-0. Less than a minute later, Berko scored again for UD on an assist from David Abidor.

Jones scored the fifth and final goal in the 79th minute as Schoonderwoerd crossed the ball for Jones’ finish on the left side.

Dayton returns to action on Oct. 28 against the VCU Rams (9-2-4, 5-1-1 A-10) at 1 p.m. ET on Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.

Notes: Friday’s 5-0 win was the first five-goal outing for the Flyers since Nov. 2, 2008 when UD beat Saint Joseph’s 7-1.
