Aug. 29, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - Head Coach Kelly Sheffield picked up his first win as a Flyer on Friday as the University of Dayton came back from an early deficit to beat the UNLV Rebels 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 26-24) in their season opener at the Sheraton Classic hosted by Arizona State University. Lindsay Fletemier paired with Nicole Bateman combined for a total of 30 kills on the day. Fletemier went 14-19 on the attack for a .684 attack percentage. In addition, Fletemier added two solo blocks and fives block assists. "Lindsay was obviously very dominant today," said head coach Kelly Sheffield, "Our offense was working pretty well most of the day and as the match went on we figured out how we [the Flyers] could score on UNLV." Bateman registered 16 kills in the match while adding six digs. In addition to her 16.5 points she had one block assist for Dayton. Senior Erin Schroeder set 47 balls for the Flyers while adding a team-high 22 digs to the Flyers win. While on the attack Schroeder went seven-for-13 while racking up a .538 hitting percentage and one solo block and one block assist. The Flyers fell into an early deficit after losing the first set to the Rebels 25-23. Dayton committed five errors while hitting a tepid .171 on the attack. UD righted the ship when their attack sizzled in the second match with a .333 percentage. "We were very aggressive from the beginning of the second game on," Sheffield said, "First matches are always tough because you don't know anything about your opponents and you usually spend the first part of the match just trying to figure out what your opponents are doing and what you can do against them." Dayton closed out UNLV in the following two sets winning 25-21 and 26-24. Bateman slammed home the match point on a ball set from Schroeder for the Flyers first victory of the season. UD is back in action later tonight with a showdown against the South Carolina Gamecocks 8 p.m. ET.
