AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Kristin Daugherty lifted the University of Dayton women's basketball team to a 68-62 win over St. Mary's in the last day of the World Vision Classic Monday evening. Daugherty scored 14 points in a two minute stretch in the final minutes of the game to help the Flyers earn their first win of the season.
Daugherty finished the game with a career-high 31 points on 2-of-3 shooting from three point range. She also went a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. The Flyer sophomore grabbed seven rebounds, had two assists in the game and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Junior Kendel Ross also paced UD finishing with a double-double. Ross had a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Seven different Flyers scored in the game. Justine Raterman tied for a game-high 12 rebounds, while also finishing as Dayton's third leading scorer with five points.
Maija Lahde finished with 19 points for SMC, while teammate Louella Tomlinson had 12 boards.
Both teams finished 33.8 percent from the field. The Flyers out-rebounded the Gaels by only one (49-48).
The team's traded baskets to open the frame. Lahde got one up for SMC, while Daugherty hit a three for Dayton.
Daugherty hit three straight to open the half and had a free throw for Dayton's first eight points of the game.
It was a back-and-forth battle from that point on with six lead changes and two ties up until the 11:46 media timeout.
The Gaels would take their largest lead of the frame at the 6:46 mark after an 8-0 run as the Flyers remained scoreless for nearly four minutes.
However, Patrice Lalor ended UD's drought with a lay-up and Raterman scored another on the next possession to move the score 31-24 with 3:59 left to play.
The Flyers would attempt to dwindle down the Gaels advantage and would pull within six points behind back-to-back lay-ups from Casey Nance and Kendel Ross, but SMC would take the lead into the half, 34-28.
In the second half, Daugherty put a shot up right out of the gate and was fouled for the three-point play.
Raterman would tie it up 34-34 on nearly the same play after being fouled on a lay-up under the basket.
St. Mary's didn't get a shot up until 17:16 when Leanna Richey scored on a fastbreak play and the team would get two more off behind Erika Ruiz and Lahde to take a four point lead 40-36 with 15:19 remaining on the clock.
SMC turned it up with an 11-0 spurt from the 13:11 to 10:41, but UD would answer with a 10-0 run of their own to keep it close, 53-50, with 7:20 left in the game.
Daugherty delivered big time in the stretch scoring 14 points in a little over two and half minutes to give UD the lead 64-57 with 2:57 left.
It was a lead the Flyers would never relinquish eventually earning their first win of the season, 68-62.
