FORMER FLYER NAMED ALTERNATE OF CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAM

Former University of Dayton women’s basketball standout Kendel Ross has been named an alternate for the Canadian Senior Women’s Basketball Team which is participating in the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Ankara, Turkey June 25-July 1.

Canada is vying for one of five berths that are on the line. The team will open the tournament versus Mali June 25 and play France June 26 to finish group play. In order to qualify for the Olympics, Canada will need to place in the top two in their group and win their quarterfinal game. If Canada was to lose its quarterfinal game, it will face one of the other three quarterfinalists who lost. Then they will need to win two games in order to qualify for the last berth into the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Ross, the 6-foot-1 forward from Sarnia, Ontario, has been a part of the Canadian National Training program since 2005. She will not travel to Turkey unless there is an injury or conflict with one of the other Canadian national players.

A four-year letterwinner and two-time captain, Ross finished her career at Dayton with 1,063 points, 18th all-time. She led the Flyers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and First Round win in 2010.  Ross is currently training at the University of Dayton, while pursuing her master's degree.
