Dayton Flyers

The University of Dayton women’s tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend. The Flyers defeated Oberlin, 4-3, and fell to Southeast Missouri, 5-2.

Winning the doubles point was critical to the Flyers’ success. Oberlin’s Grace Porter and Finley Gates were not match for Claire McNulty and Maureen Stevens. UD was victorious 8-2. Sammi Hornbarger and Victoria Marchant held on to defeat Preeyah Shah and Brenna Sheldon in a close 8-6 match.

In singles action, Stevens defeated Sheldon, 6-3, 6-2, at the number 2 position. Also tallying wins were Hornbarger, who swept Gates, 6-0, 6-0, and Erin Filbrandt who edged out on top against Porter, 6-3, 7-6, (4).

Southeast Missouri State was too much for UD to handle. The Redhawks won the number 2 and 3 doubles matches. At the number 3 position the Flyers defaulted due to Georgia Lammers’ injury that she suffered against Oberlin. In singles, McNulty defeated Nikole Novikova 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 and Hornbarger beat Jessica Courtnell, 6-5, 6-3.

The Flyers travel to Duquesne next weekend to face in the Dukes in a 10 AM match on Saturday, March 24.
