DAYTON, Ohio -
The University of Dayton track and field team is set to open up the 2007-08 indoor season Saturday, Dec. 1 in the annual Findlay Oiler Open hosted by the University of Findlay. The meet, held inside the Malcom Athletic Center, will begin at 11 a.m. ET.

The Flyers are set to participate in five events throughout the indoor season leading up to the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships. "Our focus this year is preparing and competing well for both the Atlantic 10 Indoor and Outdoor Championships," said first year head coach Adam Steinwachs.

"UD is not a team that can be overlooked in the A-10 this season. In addition to making our presence felt within the Conference, I want to raise the expectation levels within each member of our team," Steinwachs added.

With a relatively young team comprised of 14 freshmen, 20 sophomores, nine juniors and only two seniors, the team will look to have another record-breaking season using its youth and versatility.

Competing for the Flyers in the sprinting events include last year's two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Lauren McCormick and sophomore Brittany Thomas. "Our sprinters have traditionally been a strong group at the A-10 meet. This should continue in 2008 as this group continues to develop technically, physically, and mentally. McCormick and Thomas will be key athletes for us this season," noted Steinwachs.

In the throws, Sarah Allen and Molly McCarty will be expected to lead the squad. "We have a strong, young group in the throwing events and this year will be a good one for the Flyer throwers." Allen and McCarty lead a talented freshmen group including 2007 Ohio State Shot Put Champion Johnna Zaccari.

The jumpers will also be key contributors to the team effort and will be led by Amy Kremer and Megan Sweeney. Kremer, the 2006 A-10 Indoor and Outdoor High Jump and Heptathlon Champion and A-10 Rookie of the Year, recorded a school-record jump of 5-8.00 for fourth place overall at last year's Findlay Oiler Open. Last season at the same meet, Sweeney posted a career best jump of 5-06.00, which put her among the top 5 jumps in school history.

As for distance, assistant track and field coach and head cross country coach Ann Alyanak, expects the distance team to improve upon last year's performances. "My goal for the distance runners is to score points in each distance even so that we are doing our part to contribute to the overall success of the track team. Our main goal as a program is to be vying for an A-10 Championship in the near future," Alyanak noted.

"I expect our three freshmen Maureen Bulgrin, Liz Coorey, and Brigitte Sherman to be key contributors this track season after each had a successful cross country season. We also have all of our middle distance runners returning including sophomore Kate Tejkl, who scored in the 800 meter at the A-10 Indoor Championships last season. With this solid group of runners we should be able to put together some exciting relay teams as well," added Alyanak.
