DAYTON LEADS ATLANTIC 10 IN 2011 LEARFIELD CUP STANDINGS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Dayton finished first among schools in the Atlantic 10 Conference in the final Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Dayton finished the year ranked 110th out of the 284 institutions listed with its league-best 152.00 points, followed by Temple (117th, 148.00), Richmond (138th, 115.00) and Xavier (150th, 100.00).

Stanford captured the top spot for the 17th straight year, with 1550.25 total points, while Ohio State (1277.05) and California (1219.50) rounded out the top three.

Dayton opened the year by securing 100 points from volleyball (50) and women's soccer (50) in the fall, before earning 52 points in the winter, as the women's basketball team (25) advanced to the NCAA Tournament and Mallory Barnes (27) repeated as an All-American at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships placing sixth in the weight throw.

This is the latest accolade Flyer athletics has earned in 2010-11.  Individually, UD had eight conference Performers of the Year, five Student-Athletes of the Year, four conference Coaches of the Year, six Capital One Academic All-Americans and three other All-Americans with Barnes.

Dayton student-athletes have a combined cumulative grade point average of 3.26, the highest in school history.  In the spring 2011 semester, 70% (271 of 385) of them had GPA’s of 3.0 or better.  Nine different Flyer athletics teams have multi-year APR (Academic Progress Report) scores of 990 (out of a perfect APR of 1000) -- women's basketball, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis, indoor track and outdoor  track.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's website at www.directorscup.org.
