FLYERS STUMBLE AGAINST GAMECOCKS; LOSE 3-1 AT SHERATON CLASSIC

<P><B>Aug. 29, 2008</B> <P> <P> <!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES BEGIN --> <A HREF="http://onlyfans.cstv.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/stats/2008-2009/match2.html">Final Stats</A> <!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES END --> <P> <P><B>TEMPE, Ariz. - </B> The University of Dayton Flyers suffered their first loss on Friday to the South Carolina Gamecocks at the ASU Sheraton Classic. Dayton was knocked off by the Gamecocks 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-20,25-21). <P>Senior leadership proved to be big in keeping the Flyers afloat in the second match. <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/schroeder_erin00.html" >Erin Schroeder</a> posted a double-double in the loss, tallying 17 digs and 47 assists. <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/bateman_nicole00.html" >Nicole Bateman</a> also posted a double-double for her effort on 17 kills and 22 digs. <A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/akerhielm_bethany00.html" >Bethany Akerhielm</a> notched 15 kills and a .414 percentage while on the attack to help account for a significant portion of Dayton's scoring. Akerhielm also came up with two solo blocks and one block assist on the night. <P>The Flyers committed 31 attack errors against South Carolina while the Gamecocks committed 21 attack errors. <P>"We need to serve more aggressively than we did and probably make better choices than we did," said head coach <A HREF="http://onlyfans.cstv.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/sheffield_kelly00.html" >Kelly Sheffield</a>. <P><A HREF="http://www.fansonly.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-volley/mtt/fletemier_lindsay00.html" >Lindsay Fletemier</a> recorded 12.0 points for UD in the match. Fletemier had 10 kills on 21 attempts for a .381 attack percentage against the Gamecocks. <P>Dayton fell behind early in the match after a few costly errors at the end of the first set, despite putting away the Gamecocks handedly in the second set, the Flyers could not overcome the South Carolina momentum. <P> "I was proud of how we worked at the end of the match in the last 10 or 15 points," said Sheffield, "If we would have played that hard and with that much energy, then the bottom line could have been different." <P>The Flyers will face tournament host Arizona State to close out the Sheraton Classic tomorrow at 4:00 pm ET.
