No. 19 Dayton will hit the road to open the 2011 season on Friday against North Dakota in the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament in Green Bay, Wis. The four teams participating this weekend – Dayton, Green Bay, North Dakota and James Madison – won a combined 75 matches in 2010.

Season Openers
Dayton has won the last six season-openers entering this weekend. Of those six teams, five went on to advance to the NCAA Tournament. It is the third time in four years under Head Coach Kelly Sheffield that the Flyers have began the season on the road – trekking to tournaments Arizona State in 2008, Purdue in 2009, and at home in 2010.

Starting Strong
Dayton began each of the last two seasons with winning streaks – 10 in 2009 and five in 2010. In both years, Dayton went on to capture the Atlantic 10 Regular Season and Tournament crowns.

Scouting the Competition
North Dakota (25-5, 12-0 Great West)
The Fighting Sioux finished 2010 on a 15-match winning streak to capture the Great West Conference title for the second time … North Dakota returns seven starters from last season’s Championship team, but lose Great West Player of the Year, Erin Joki … Head Coach Ashley Hardee holds a 47-11 record entering her fourth season with the program … Despite having won the last two Great West postseason tournaments, UND has not been to the NCAA Tournament as the Great West is not an automatic bid conference … Next season, North Dakota will join the Big Sky Conference.

Green Bay (12-19, 8-8 Horizon League)
Host Green Bay was picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League … The Phoenix return senior outside hitter Abbey Gitter – who led the team in kills, libero Brittany Groth – who led the Horizon League in digs per set … Green Bay is coached by Debbie Kirch, who is 148-274 in her 15th season with the program.

James Madison (22-8, 10-4 Colonial)
Second-year head coach Lauren Steinbrecher is leading the Dukes in the right direction after a solid 10-4 conference campaign in 2010 and an overall 11-win improvement from 2009 to 2010 … James Madison was picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association in the preseason … The Dukes return three starters and the libero from last season … Outside hitter Danielle Erb was the team leader in kills last season with 3.41 kills per set … Libero Natalie Abel averaged 2.95 digs per set as a Third Team All-CAA selection.
