UD SET FOR THEIR THIRD TOURNAMENT OF 2008
The Flyers play in their third consecutive tournament this season, making their first-ever appearance in the Courtyard by Marriott/UNCW Classic in Wilmington, N.C. This is the fourth annual Classic hosted by UNC-Wilmington. The Seahawks won the tournament the first two years it was held, with Liberty taking the crown in 2007. The Flyers will play the hosts on the first day of the UNCW Classic, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 12 at UNCW Soccer Stadium. Dayton will play Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. ET. The Atlantic 10 will be well-represented in the Classic. In addition to UD, Charlotte, picked third in the A-10 preseason poll, will also be competing in Wilmington.
SERIES INFORMATION
Dayton will start two new series this weekend in the UNCW Classic. The Flyers will play the Seahawks for the first time in the program's history when they square off Friday. UD is 0-1-0 all-time against schools from the Colonial Athletic Association. UD will also face the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for the first time ever. The Flyers are 0-0-1 all-time against schools in the Big South conference.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
North Carolina-Wilmington is coached by Aidan Heaney, now in his eighth season at the helm of the Seahawks. UNCW has a 1-3-0 record going into the tournament, its lone win a 3-2 double overtime victory over Furman (Aug. 31). Devan Carroll scored the game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation. Freshman Matt Brown scored the golden goal in double overtime. Brown leads the Seahawk offense with two goals and is tied for fourth in the CAA for goals scored. Freshman keeper Brandon Miller owns an impressive 0.67 GAA for UNCW. In its first four games the Seahawks have been outscored, 9-4.
The Chanticleers are coached by Shaun Docking, and heading into his 11th season he owns a 125-64-14 record at Coastal Carolina. CCU is 1-3-0 this season and currently on a three-game losing slide. They opened the season with a 1-0 win against Florida Atlantic in the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational (Aug. 29). Despite outshooting opponents 54-38, the Chanticleers have been outscored, 7-3. Three of their four contests have been decided by one goal. Junior Robert Hunter leads the team with four points on a goal and two assists. Sophomore Philip Latham has a 1.75 GAA and 10 saves on the season.
FLYER NOTES
Junior Alex Torda is tied for third in the Atlantic 10 in goals scored (3) and is tied fourth for points (6). Junior goalkeeper Alex Davis leads the Atlantic 10 in saves with 21. He is also fifth in save percentage (.808) and seventh for goals against average (1.18). Senior Florian DeCamps leads the Flyers with two assists. He is tied for third in the A-10 with .50 assists per game. Junior Zach Weiss and freshman Jack Pearson have both scored game-winning goals for the Flyers. They are tied for second in the A-10. Torda and Weiss were named to both the Dayton Marriott Invitational and Wisconsin Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational all-tournament teams. Weiss was MVP of the Dayton Invitational.
LAST WEEK RECAPPED
The Flyers went 0-1-1 at Wisconsin's Middleton Sports & Fitness Invitational. Dayton lost to Milwaukee on the first day of the tournament, 1-0, as the Panthers scored a goal with 39 seconds to play in regulation. Dayton tied nationally-ranked Wisconsin, 3-3 in double overtime. It's the first time in head coach Dennis Currier's career that the Flyers didn't win when scoring three goals or more. His record when this is the case is now 13-0-1. Alex Torda, who was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List this season, came alive for the Flyers putting away two spectacular goals against the Badgers. He got Dayton on the board first in the 8th minute, drilling a shot past the keeper from the 18 on a transition play. On UD's next goal, senior Florian DeCamps fed the ball to Torda at the 18 and he took care of the rest, blasting it upper 90 to give UD a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute. Torda and Zach Weiss both made the all-tournament team for UD. Every game of the tournament was decided by a goal or less. Wisconsin, who had defeated No. 20 Santa Clara in overtime on day one, won the tournament with a 1-0-1 record.
