Men’s Basketball Adds Mustapha Amzil To Stellar Recruiting Class

National Ranking Rises to No. 15 With Fourth Student-Athlete In The Early Signing Period

DAYTON – University of Dayton men's basketball coach Anthony Grant has announced that Mustapha Amzil, a 6-foot-10, 215 pound forward from Helsinki, Finland, has signed his letter of intent with the Flyers.

Amzil came to the United States this fall and is attending First Love Christian Academy in Washington, Pa.  He is in a position to complete the semester at First Love and then enroll at UD and join the Flyers this winter.

"We're excited to announce the addition of Mustapha Amzil to our 2021 recruiting class and welcome him to the Flyer family, Grant said.  "We actually began recruiting him in the spring of 2019 as a potential 2020 recruit. He brings a combination of size, skill, and versatility that will fit our system and style of play very well."

Because of his limited time in the U.S., he is currently listed as a three-star recruit, but his addition catapulted an already projected Top-25 recruiting class up to as high as 15th.

He joins a trio of highly-regarded prospects – DaRon Holmes, Malachi Smith and Kaleb Washington – in the Flyer fall recruiting class.

Amzil had a strong showing in 2019 playing for Finland at the U18 European Championships in Latvia, where he averaged 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in seven games.

Before coming to the States, he attended the Helsinki Basketball Academy.  Last season for HBA-Marsky, he averaged 10.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists, as HBA-Marsky finished 21-0 in Finland's first division before the league's post season was cancelled due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

Even though international competitions were not played this summer, Amzil was able to participate in some workouts with the Finnish National Team before leaving Finland and enrolling at First Love Christian.
