New University of Dayton men’s basketball coach Archie Miller has announced that Vee Sanford, a former sophomore at Georgetown University, is transferring to Dayton. Sanford had announced his intentions following his campus visit on May 18, but it could not be announced by the University until after he signed his financial aid agreement.
"We are excited about Vee and his future with us,” Miller said. “He comes from a great family, and has tremendous character, and is very motivated to get better. His contributions to our program start immediately and we look forward to not only him making us better, but us having the chance to develop together."
Sanford, a 6-foot-3 guard from Lexington, Ky., will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
At Georgetown, Sanford played in 27 games in both his freshman and sophomore years. Averaging 6.6 minutes a game this past season, he averaged 2.4 points per, and shot .522 (24-46) from the field, .600 (12-20) from three-point range and 1.000 (6-6 from the line). As a freshman, he averaged 1.2 points a game, but got to the line 17 times, making 14 freebies.
At Lexington Catholic High School, Sanford averaged 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.4 assists a game as a senior and was selected First Team All-Kentucky by the Louisville to The Courier-Journal. A McDonald's All-American nominee, he was ranked 30th nationally by Scout.com for point guards. Sanford completed his high school career by playing in the Kentucky/Indiana All-Stars Basketball Classic.
UD returns three starters from last year’s 22-14 team that reached the championship game of the Atlantic 10 tournament. The Flyers reached the post-season for the fourth consecutive season, playing in the NIT.
