DAYTON, Ohio – Ohio Governor John Kasich honored the 2013-14 Dayton Flyers men's basketball team on its successes in the NCAA Tournament.
Kasich spoke for a few minutes before taking pictures with the team. He was presented with a Dayton jersey with his last name on the back at the end of the ceremony.
The governor spoke for about 10 minutes, rehashing some of the moments throughout the Elite Eight run, as well as mentioning what it meant to people in the state of Ohio.
"I think this was a remarkable run and it really represents the spirit of Dayton," said Kasich. "I hope the city and community will do more to invest in these young guys and make sure they have a great future right here in Ohio."
Kasich then delivered resolution for each player.
"I want you to give this to your mother -- don't leave it in your dorm room," Kasich joked.
The governor also had glowing praise for head coach
Archie Miller.
"I think he's a values guy and if he wasn't, he couldn't have molded this team into the dynamo that it was," said Kasich.
Kasich headlined the First Four Local Organizing Committee's "Hoopla Thank You Reception," and was joined by University of Dayton President Daniel J. Curran, members of the 2013-14 men's basketball team, state and local officials honoring the work of the committee and sponsors.
Prior to the event, the governor met privately with coach Miller, the staff and the players.
Backed by a run to the Elite Eight, the Flyers ended the 2013-14 season ranked No. 18 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.
Dayton became just the sixth team in the NCAA Tournament's history to advance to the Elite Eight as a No. 11 seed by defeating then No. 24 Ohio State, No. 12 Syracuse and Stanford.
The Flyers finished the 2013-14 season 26-11 overall. The 26 wins were the third-most in school history.
