FLYER MEN’S BASKETBALL JOINS DAYTON REGION WALK OF FAME

2014 Honorees To Be Inducted Sept. 25

DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's basketball program is one of five new additions to the Dayton Region's Walk of Fame.

The Walk of Fame Class of 2014 will be announced at the Dayton City Commission meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18.  Madeline Iseli, who along with Cathy Ponitz is co-chair of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee, will make the announcement.

This year's honorees represent accomplishments in sports, the arts, engineering, education and business. Joining the Flyers on the Walk of Fame this year are gospel music pioneer Paul "Easy" Arnold, aerospace engineer and community service leader Clark E. Beck, top business executive Richard H. Grant, Sr., and nationally syndicated band leader Michael Hauer.

UD basketball's citation reads "The University of Dayton Men's Basketball Program (est. 1903) is one of the most successful college basketball teams, on and off the court, in NCAA history. On the court, the Flyers are one of a handful of teams to have more than 1,500 wins.  UD has reached the post-season 41 times, including 15 trips to the NCAA tournament. In the NCAA tournament, Dayton has reached the "Sweet Sixteen" seven times, the "Elite 8" three times, and NCAA championship game once. In the NIT, the Flyers won the tournament championship three times and reached the finals eight times. In the classroom, UD is consistently one of the top programs in the nation in graduation rates. In the community, the Flyers are the inspiration for one of the best fan bases in college basketball. That's a tradition that began when Dayton made its first trip to Madison Square Garden, and was showcased in the national media in 2014 when UD made an exciting run to the Elite 8."

Wright Dunbar, Inc. sponsors the Dayton Region's Walk of Fame. Starting with the original group honored that included Orville and Wilbur Wright and Paul Lawrence Dunbar in 1996, over 140 outstanding individuals and groups and their contributions to the Miami Valley have been memorialized with granite stones in the Wright Dunbar Historic Business District between Broadway and Shannon.

This year's honorees will be celebrated at a luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014.

Nominations for the 2015 Walk of Fame are already being accepted. Forms can be downloaded here.
