DAYTON, Ohio -Â For the last five weeks, Dayton-area YMCA campers have spent time at the University of Dayton participating in athletics and academic enrichment. This partnership between University of Dayton Athletics and the Dayton Area YMCA has existed for the past 10 years. Â It all culminated in the YMCA Olympics at the UD track over the past two days.Â
About 50 UD student-athletes, coaches and staff volunteered with the nearly 800 campers from 13 Dayton-area YMCAs. Â They participated in Olympic opening ceremonies and events, varying from the 100-meter dash, football throw, high jump, long jump, soccer shoot, shuttle run and dance off.Â
"This helps us build a sense of community. This event is a culmination of the five-week summer camp program. For the past five weeks YMCA campers have come to the University of Dayton for athletics and academic enrichment," said Jeni Gerard, a learning specialist in UD's Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes and coordinator of the YMCA camps at UD. "They participated in tennis, soccer, rowing, basketball, football and volleyball with UD coaches and student-athletes."
"It was a great experience for all of the YMCA campers, and all of us volunteers as well," said UD assistant coach for men's cross country
